Amnesiac RPG Characters

Comments

I've played video games where this is a feature. Final Fantasy VII does it, and so did KotOR. In games it's just an easy way to put the player on the same footing as the character, so that your character can be ignorant of past events just like you are.
Yeah, I've seen this sort of thing in videogames, and it's a good device there, but I haven't seen it used as much in pen and paper RPG's (though I've since been shown a few examples of it) which is what I was really thinking about.

The difference in a Pen and Paper RPG is that the players often want to create their own character and background, to really make it their own. Since they're actually role playing as the character and making all the characters decisions, rather than following a script or just choosing a few bits of dialogue, player "buy in" is important, or you get a fairly dry boring game (at least in the role playing aspects) where the players don't necessarily really feel invested in the game.

I also find it much more fun when the players take a more active role in creating the world and the history and story, rather than passivly just playing through the story the Game Master feeds them. So I like the idea of players writing backgrounds and such for characters, but thought it would be interesting to find a way to add that element, while also using amnesia as a plot device.
You might like Vox. I wrote the RPG with an introductory scenario wherein all the characters have amnesia.

Interesting I'll have to check that out. At first I was a bit confused, and thought you were suggesting I try out blogging on Vox... ...while on Vox!
