Music Game Question

I think Rock Band is supposed to be a more robust game--more play modes, band customization, etc., but I don't know about its solo play. I know it releases more downloads more frequently than GH, but of course they cost money. My read of the community is that Rock Band is the better product, but I don't know how much of that is based on the multiplayer game.
Thanks for the reply. I'm currrently kind of leaning toward Rock Band, but I've only had very limited exposure to either game, so I don't really know much about the single player or "campaign" modes in them, or how they play solo. I seem to remember Wil Wheaton saying a while back he thought Rock Band was better with friends and GH by yourself, but I don't know what that was based on, or if his and my taste in videogames are similar enough to really use that as a metric for which to buy.
You're completely discounting the microphone which is fun for people who don't normally play video games. If you could get your gf to sing while you Guitar then you can have sweet couple moments while she's doing her best Ozzy impression for War Pigs.

I can't comment on the GH career mode but I can say I find the single-player rock band pretty fun. You should ask people who have played both about the practice modes. I think the RB practice mode has more features which is helpful for guitarists struggling to learn tough solos and whatnot.
Solo learning is my least favorite part of that type of game. It's where I think the games break down from being fun ways to play music and you can see that they're just simulations of instruments. When playing an instrument, if there's a hard lick of notes you need to master, you can just play those eight or ten notes over and over until you've got them, then move right along. With the video game, you're limited by how the simulation forces you to play, which can be frustrating.
It's not so much that I was discounting the fun of the mic (or the drums) so much as I was looking to save money.

But now that I'm looking into it more, and the costs, I think I may just wait a bit longer, and save up a bit more and just get the full Rock Band kit, which looks like it won't be all that much more expensive than the plan I had looked at of just getting a guitar and the standalone game, which looks like it's likely to be at least $100, maybe more. (Especially since it seems that used guitars are not so easy to come by right now). So I might as well just save up a bit more and get the full set up, which will be more fun when I get lots of people together anyway.
